Text and Subtext

I used to write a lot of poetry...not so much any more. This one is pretty recent, though, written within the past year. I'm sharing this in response to a writing prompt from The Lightning and The Lightning-Bug. The Challenge today was to share a personal poem, so here it is.

Text and Subtext

He sent me a text message.

“Is it over?”

(whythefuckwouldyoutextmethat?) I thought.

And didn’t answer

I mean really, I don’t even have a keyboard on my phone.

How was I to respond?

Beep beep beep-beep-beep beep-beep beep-beep?

(maybe)?

And that night he asks if I got his text

(yesyoumoronofcourseigotyourstupidtext)

What text?, I asked, making a show of looking at my phone.

This one? Is what over?

(themoviethebookthegame?)

Us. Is it over between us?

(breathebreathebreathe)

Why would you text me that?

Is it?

(justsayyesandbedonewithit)

Maybe?

  1. Wow, nicely done! I love the lines in parenthesis; your true thoughts, what you really want to say. I wonder how much we end up filtering those true thoughts throughout the day and on occasions like these. Your inner struggle is very evident in the "subtext" here. Very nicely written. I like!

    Thanks for linking up!

  2. This is good...and sad...and seriously?? Who does that with a text?

  3. I like, too!

Seems like "he" chose a coward's way out of dealing with what he needed to know. Easier to hide behind a text rather than ask in person and see your hurt.

    Well done!

  4. Thank you all! I'm not used to having anyone actually read anything I write!

  5. I love the way you put the thoughts in to parenthesis-very nice.

But, for real, I hate when people do that in texts! So annoying!
